There’s a reason the phrase “when in Rome” comes from this exact city: the Colosseum is the
postcard image people picture before they’ve even booked the flight, and it draws crowds to match.
Lonely Planet’s own framing of Rome is
blunt: “Rome isn’t dangerous, per se, but it’s a busy, crowded city not totally free of pickpockets
and other petty crime.” That lines up with the
U.S. State Department’s Italy advisory,
which frames the country’s risk the same way: petty theft is a significant concern in popular
tourist locations and on public transportation, with most incidents described as crimes of
opportunity (pickpocketing and bag-snatching) rather than violence, and the Colosseum and Roman
Forum named specifically among the higher-risk tourist spots.
The one scam specific to the Colosseum itself is the unlicensed “gladiator” photo op: costumed
centurions offer a free photo, then demand payment, often in the €20–40 range, technically outlawed
by the city in 2017 but still reported. Unofficial ticket touts and unlicensed taxis working the
crowds outside are the other recurring complaints. None of this is unique to the Colosseum: sources
describe the same pattern of crowd-driven petty theft and tourist scams at the Trevi Fountain, the
Spanish Steps, and the Vatican/bus 64 corridor, and
Fodor’s own reader-forum guidance
is explicit that Rome is “a very safe city” by international standards, with petty theft rather than
violent crime the operative concern.
The 10 hotels below sit across two different areas: the Celio side directly facing the Colosseum on
busy Via Labicana, and the Monti side a few minutes further out along and off Via Cavour, which
multiple sources describe as a quieter, more village-like quarter despite being just as close on
foot. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and this neighborhood wasn’t either: Monti is one of the city’s
oldest rioni, and it still feels like a small town tucked inside a capital. None of the ten hotels
had a documented pattern of actual theft or safety incidents in their own guest reviews: every
recurring complaint found was about street or building noise, a comfort issue, not a security one.
